Today is the sixth the National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims,During the Japanese occupation of China, an estimated 30 million Chinese were killed. Although the Japanese troops covered up the atrocity to the world by various means, many foreign journalists remained in Nanjing risked their lives to report and expose the atrocity to the world。In the American documentary what are we fighting for, there is such a footage。
It is impossible to know who shot the video because of the long time. The only thing we know for sure is that whenever we see the footage, the pain in our hearts will not be diminished. Actually, the reports that had a great impact on western society came from three American correspondents.
On December 18, 1937, the New York Times report Butchery Marked Capture of Nanking, Frank wrote, a group Japanese officers with smoking, supervised the slaughter of about one battalion of Chinese prisoners, they put them about 15 people in a row, with guns to shoot, they even invited the navy appreciate the carnage.
The Associated Press McDaniel, he saw a long Chinese soldiers, all of his hands tied when he walked past the ranks, a Chinese soldier suddenly broke away from the team, on his knees begged McDaniel’s help, he wrote, I really could do nothing at that time, China is dying, dying, dying.
The Chicago Daily News published Steele's report: four days of hell……
In the ominous words of Plato: "Only the dead have seen the end of war." Today we would like to say, Memorial is not to continue the hatred, but to evoke people's commitment to peace。
